Family and skilled migration

Plan family reunification together with the work permit.

The exact residence title held by the person in Germany affects language requirements, evidence and possible facilitations.

Start with the sponsor's exact title

“Working in Germany” is not a sufficient legal description. The legal provision, validity and supplementary conditions of the sponsor's residence title are needed.

Spouses and minor children

Facilitations may apply where the sponsor is a skilled worker or EU Blue Card holder. Identity, family relationship, age and custody must nevertheless be documented. Livelihood, insurance or housing may remain relevant depending on the case.

Parents require a separate assessment

A special route exists for parents and, in certain cases, parents-in-law of particular skilled workers. It does not apply to every employed person. The date on which the relevant skilled-worker title was first issued and comprehensive financial protection, including health and long-term care insurance, are important.

Organise the documents by person

  • Sponsor: passport, residence title, employment, income, housing and insurance
  • Applicant: passport, civil-status records, visa application and language evidence where required
  • Children: birth certificate, custody and consent
  • Parents: proof of relationship, financing and appropriate insurance
Parental reunification for skilled workers is not a general hardship provision. The statutory situation must fit precisely.
