Permanent residence

Choose the correct settlement route for skilled workers.

The EU Blue Card, skilled-worker permits and a German qualification can lead to different requirements and qualifying periods.

The current title determines the route

EU Blue Card holders and certain skilled workers benefit from special provisions in addition to the general settlement permit. Residence-title history, qualified employment and pension contributions must be considered together.

Do not count months alone

Relevant factors include permitted qualified employment, pension contributions, German language skills, livelihood, housing and possible criminal proceedings. Interruptions, changes of employer and periods under another residence purpose should be documented chronologically.

A German qualification may matter

Graduates of German universities or vocational training who subsequently work as skilled workers may qualify under a separate facilitated route. Qualification, subsequent residence title and actual work must fit together.

Useful documents

  • all previous residence titles and supplementary sheets
  • employment contracts and current employer confirmation
  • pension insurance record
  • salary and livelihood evidence
  • language and integration certificates
  • lease and current housing costs
General time statements can be misleading. The decisive question is which periods count under the provision that applies to the individual case.
